Sour Cream and Chive Turkey Burgers Recipe

Jul 10, 2017 · 35 Comments

Jump to Recipe Jump to Video Print Recipe

These sour cream and chive turkey burgers are one of my all-time favorite ways to make turkey burgers. They’re juicy, flavorful, and come together quickly – the perfect easy dinner idea for busy weeknights or weekend grilling. The secret ingredient? Sour cream! It keeps the turkey moist and tender while adding just the right amount of tang and richness. Whether you cook them on the grill, stovetop, or in the oven, these turkey burgers turn out perfectly every time. Forget dry or bland turkey burgers – this version is tender, packed with flavor, and always a hit!

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • Juicy and flavorful: The sour cream adds moisture and richness so the burgers stay tender and never dry out.

  • Quick and easy: Comes together in about 20 minutes from start to finish.

  • Healthier option: Made with lean ground turkey and light sour cream for a lighter burger that still tastes indulgent.

  • Versatile cooking methods: Grill them in summer, cook them in a skillet, or bake them in the oven.

  • Customizable toppings: They pair perfectly with fresh lettuce, tomato, red onion, provolone cheese, and pickles – but the sky’s the limit!

Tips for Success

  • Don’t overmix the meat: Gently combine the ingredients until just incorporated – overmixing can make the burgers dense.

  • Keep them cold before cooking: Chilling the patties for 15 minutes helps them hold their shape on the grill or pan.

  • Check for doneness: Cook to an internal temperature of 165°F for perfectly cooked turkey.

  • Use a little oil: A light brush of olive oil prevents sticking, especially on the grill.

  • Rest before serving: Let the burgers rest for a few minutes after cooking so the juices redistribute.

Customizations

  • Make it spicy: Add a pinch of cayenne, diced jalapeños, or a few dashes of hot sauce.

  • Use different herbs: Swap chives for parsley, green onions, or dill for a fresh twist.

  • Cheesy upgrade: Mix shredded cheddar, mozzarella, or feta right into the patties.

  • Dairy-free version: Use a dairy-free sour cream alternative – it works beautifully!

  • Mini sliders: Form into smaller patties for a fun appetizer or party platter.

Serving Suggestions

  • Classic style: Serve on toasted buns with lettuce, tomato, red onion, provolone, and pickles.

  • Low-carb option: Wrap in crisp romaine leaves or serve over a salad with creamy ranch or chive dressing.

  • Add sides: Pair with sweet potato fries, roasted veggies, or a simple cucumber salad.

  • Flavorful sauce pairing: Try them with garlic aioli, honey mustard, or a swipe of chipotle mayo for an extra kick.

I wanted to leave some of the old photos just for you to see lol-I’ve been loving these burgers since 2010.

These were delicious! I make my patties pretty thin because I’m not a fan of thick ones (and I like them to cook all the way through without getting too crispy on the outside) so this recipe made 6 patties for me. I cooked them on the stove top 4-5 minutes per side. The flavors were yummy (I did cut the cayenne in half as I tend to do for my little ones) but I think it would have actually been ok to keep it as is. It was so easy to throw together and made for such a quick weeknight dinner. This would be perfect for busy school nights. Thanks for this awesome recipe!

Yes, I have done this many times. They thaw/cook really well after the fact. Or what I sometimes like to do is cook them all, and then freeze them after cooking. That way when i’m need of a quick meal, I can just microwave them and they’re good to go.

Thanks so much for posting this wonderful recipe. We have stopped eating beef and now I’m having to find recipes to substitute for burgers, tacos, meatloaf and such. These burgers were way better than beef burgers. This will be a staple in my monthly menu rotation.

If you’re baking them I would do 350 for 1/2 an hour, flipping at 15 minutes. The internal temperature should be 165 🙂

These are so awesome!!! Have you ever tried Greek yogurt in place of sour cream Phi? Of course, they’re two very different things in terms of composition, since the first one is fattier, so we’re really wondering if it would work:) In any case, these are fantastic turkey burgers and we’d LOVE to try them.

Thanks for your comment Mirella and Panos. I have tried Greek yogurt instead of sour cream and it worked good, but I like the flavor of the sour cream a little better 🙂
      Hope all is well

I am going to try this, but I will be calling it, “Chive Turkey!” as you should have, or Bob of “Bob’s Burgers” would have on his burger of the day board. If he would ever consider using turkey, which I doubt.

Made these the other day, and we had the other two leftover tonight. The “Chive Turkey!” burgers were declared very tasty (white cheddar variant). That’s no jive! They’ll be added to the rotation, and we’ll try the feta version. Thanks! While turkeys won’t be displacing our burger meat of choice, their fellow North American native, the bison from our Colorado grill grate we think they can learn to coexist peacefully. Turns out Bob did have a “Don’t Give Me No Chive Burger (served with no chives)” on an episode.
