For the longest time, we had this front room that was…well, a mystery. It held kids’ toys (that no one played with), a changing table (that only occasionally got used), and a tiny sectional (that no one sat on—because there was literally nothing to look at). No TV, no purpose, no life.
Just beyond it, through what used to be glass doors (we took them off because we could see our toddlers breaking them in slow motion), was what we called our family room. It had a fireplace that couldn’t hold a TV, so the TV sat awkwardly in front of built-in bookshelves. Not ideal. We even got two quotes to redo the fireplace setup—$18K and $20K. For that price, I wanted it to start cooking dinner for me too.

The only thing we liked in that room was the big cozy sectional we’d splurged on a few years ago (from Room & Board – sustainable eco friendly furniture). And then, one day, Nick had a genius moment and said, “What if we just…flipped the rooms?”

I’m telling you: it changed everything.
We painted the front room a rich, moody dark green—fittingly named Chimichurri (very on-brand for a food blogger, thank you very much). We leaned into the cozy library/family room vibe, brought in oak accents to match the wood throughout our house, and moved our beloved sectional to its rightful place. And hung a giant TV.
Now? We use this room every single day. It’s cozy, it’s intentional, and it finally feels like us.
Here’s what we did and where we found everything for our dark green family room:
- Arm chairs (surprisingly from IKEA!)
- Sectional + leather ottoman (not cheap but super high quality and sustainable and great delivery/return policy)
- Paint color: chimichurri
- Green glass end table
- Side table/end table
- Abstract artwork
- Media/console table (they came and built it upon delivery!)
- Console table (this one is quite high)
- Throw pillows (still waiting on these)

And as for the changing table? Sam is almost potty trained. I’m manifesting it. Please light a candle.
Before this makeover, our favorite room in the whole house was… the powder room. Seriously. A teeny tiny bathroom I had redone in moody navy with brass accents. It always made me laugh that the smallest space got the most love. But now? The family room has taken the crown.

And one of the best parts of this whole makeover? Doing it together. Nick found so many of the pieces—we really shared a vision and worked as a team to bring it to life. It reminded me how much I love the way we tackle projects side-by-side. From sourcing oak furniture to agreeing on the paint (thank God), it was just… fun. I love how this dark green family room came out. What do you think?

I love this! The green really enhances the wood nicely.

Thank you so much! I couldn’t agree more. I used to be meh about the wood, but now I think it looks so good! Makes me want to give mini makeovers to all the rooms lol.
