Ingredients

  • 1-2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 large onion (red or yellow) thinly sliced
  • 2 bell peppers (any color, I like red and orange) thinly sliced
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder optional
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon Italian seasoning optional
  • 6-10 Italian sausages or 5 if making a smaller batch, you can buy them in a pack of 5 or get fresh ones from the deli
  • 1 jar 24 oz marinara sauce
  • Brat buns or sub rolls, however many sausages you have, 1 sausage per bun
  • Provolone cheese or mozzarella cheese slices - 1 slice per bun or shredded cheese

Instructions

Stovetop Method

  • Heat EVOO in a large skillet over medium heat. Add onions and peppers, cooking until onions are translucent and peppers are starting to brown, about 5 minutes.
  • Add sausages and cook until browned and cooked through, about 10–12 minutes. You could also grill your sausages and then add them to the onions/pepper/sauce.
  • Stir in garlic salt, kosher salt, and Italian seasoning. Pour in marinara sauce, simmer 5 minutes.
