Everything I Read In August 2024

Sep 3, 2024 · Leave a Comment

In this months reading recap I’m sharing everything I read in August 2024 which consisted of 6 books. There were some really good books this month, and I loved the combo of romance books and thrillers. If you want to read previous reviews, here. Let’s dive in!

Book reviews for August 2024 this image

The Midnight Feast 4/5 – it’s like a beautiful mysterious onion. It could have used a little more, it felt short and a few loose ends weren’t wrapped up, but it was a solid mystery/thriller. “It’s the opening night of The Manor, the newest and hottest luxury resort, and no expense, small or large, has been spared. The infinity pool sparkles; the “Manor Mule” cocktail (grapefruit, ginger, vodka, and a dash of CBD oil) is being poured with a heavy hand. Everyone is wearing linen. But under the burning midsummer sun, darkness stirs. Old friends and enemies circulate among the guests. Just outside the Manor’s immaculately kept grounds, an ancient forest bristles with secrets. And it’s not too long before the local police are called. Turns out the past has crashed the party, with deadly results.”

The Ex Vows 4.5/5– This was a really cute read. It’s by the author of You, With a View (which I rated a 5/5 in my July/August 2023 reviews ). I loved this second chances story. “Estranged exes must stick close together to save their best friend’s wedding after a string of disasters in this swoony and steamy second-chance romance from the USA Today bestselling author of You, with a View.”
Between Friends and Lovers 4.5/5– male narrator has a sexy voice, really liked this, wanted to know if she stayed friends with her friend after they cleared the air, but the love story was unique and beautiful, and I loved the epilogue. “Kennedy Ryan meets Carley Fortune in this swoon-worthy story of love and friendship in the age of social media—where what you see might not be all you get. “
God of the Woods 3.5/5 -everyone raved about this book and said it was in their top books they’ve read this year and I thought it was an ok thriller (mild thriller) and very slow paced, maybe it’s just me? It was good but not anything I’d rave about and I found the ending very unsatisfying. “Early morning, August 1975: a camp counselor discovers an empty bunk. Its occupant, Barbara Van Laar, has gone missing. Barbara isn’t just any thirteen-year-old: she’s the daughter of the family that owns the summer camp and employs most of the region’s residents. And this isn’t the first time a Van Laar child has disappeared. Barbara’s older brother similarly vanished fourteen years ago, never to be found.
As a panicked search begins, a thrilling drama unfolds. Chasing down the layered secrets of the Van Laar family and the blue-collar community working in its shadow, Moore’s multi-threaded story invites readers into a rich and gripping dynasty of secrets and second chances. It is Liz Moore’s most ambitious and wide-reaching novel yet.”
Flirty Little Secret 4/5 – I found this very cute, fair warning though it’s a little over the top pc at points.  “You’ve Got Mail meets Abbott Elementary in this charming friends-to-lovers romantic comedy where two co-workers are caught between disaster at first sight—and love at first like.”
The Last Letter 4/5– I read this because it was on someone’s best romance books I read in 2024 list but the book is actually from 2019? I cried within the first 1/2 hr! And then sobbed at the end, maybe because I have boy girl twins? Although mine do not share (yet) a crazy close bond, they’re just like brother and sister. Anyway I liked this book, thought it was a little long, but I enjoyed the narrators (I listened to this one). The story follows Ella whose brother asks her to write a fellow soldier in his unit, they form a connection, then the brother dies and asks his friend to take care of his sister. The friend had been writing under a call name, not his real name, so she doesn’t know it’s him. Emotional love story unfolds.
