With cookies being the predominant dessert of the season, I love mixing it up by adding a cake to my holiday dessert options. Plus, this cake isn’t as rich and heavy as other holiday desserts so it’s a nice treat.
Do I need any special ingredients to make chocolate cake with cinnamon whipped cream?
The best part about this recipe is it uses recipes that you likely already have in your pantry!
- All-purpose flour
- Granulated sugar
- Brown sugar
- Cocoa powder
- Baking powder
- Baking soda
- Butter
- Vegetable oil
- Iced water
- Egg
- Sour cream
- Vanilla extract
I use a hand mixer to combine ingredients, but it can get messy with the flour and cocoa powder. Keep reading for a tip on how to keep thing neat below.
Tips for making this cake:
- Hold a paper towel up to the side of the bowl so the flour doesn’t get all over your kitchen (see photo above)
- You can make beautiful decor by simply sprinkling cinnamon on top of the whipped topping and adding shaved chocolate. Simply use a vegetable peeler on a block of chocolate to create shavings.
How do you make cinnamon whipped cream?
Good news; it’s so easy!
- Whip ½ cup heavy cream with ½ cup confectioners sugar.
- Add 1/4 tsp. cinnamon
- This is done whipping when stiff peaks form.
Be careful not to over beat because it’ll get hard/curdle and nobody wants that!

Chocolate Cake With Cinnamon Whipped Cream Recipe
Ingredients
For the Cake
- 1 cup all-purpose flour plus 2 Tablespoons
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 3 Tablespoons brown sugar
- 1/4 cup cocoa powder
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/4 cup butter softened
- 1/4 cup vegetable oil canola oil works as well
- 1/2 cup iced water
- 1 egg large
- 1/4 cup sour cream
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
For Frosting
- 1/2 cup confectioners sugar
- 1/2 cup heavy cream to make your own whip cream (simple whip with a mixer until fluffy)
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon 1/4 tsp. in frosting and 1/4 tsp. on top of cake
- Chocolate shavings for decor on top of the cake
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350. Grease or spray a cake pan.
- Mix flour, granulated sugar, brown sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder and baking soda.
- In a second large bowl, using a hand or stand mixer, mix butter and oil. Add ½ cup ice water and mix until well combined. Add in eggs and ¼ cup sour cream and vanilla. Gradually add in the flour mixture.
- Pour batter into prepared pan. Bake until wooden toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean, about 30 minutes.
- Flip out of pan upside down onto plate, peel off parchment paper. Flip onto cake stand or plate etc. Allow cake to cool. While cake is cooling, make frosting.
To make frosting
- Whip 1/2 cup heavy cream with 1/2 cup confectioners sugar. Add 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon.
- This is done when stiff peaks form. Don’t over beat because it’ll get hard/curdle.
- Add chocolate shavings for decor. To make chocolate shavings, use a vegetable peeler on block of chocolate or chocolate bar.
