How to Make a Heart Shaped Cake {plus free downloadable PDF}

Making this heart shaped cake is so much fun, especially if you have kids in the house.  In this post, I’ll show you how to make a heart shaped cake, using only one circle and one square cake pan, with a downloadable PDF (this is a great cooking with kids activity).

To make this cake, you can choose to go the fully homemade route or not – both are delicious.  Any box cake mix will work or any homemade cake recipe.  Same with the frosting; it can be homemade or store bought.

How do you make a heart shaped cake?

1. Spray square and circle cake pans with cooking spray.
2. Line round cake pan with parchment paper. I do this by setting the cake pan on a piece of parchment paper and tracing it with a pen, then cutting out the circle.
3. Spray parchment paper with cooking spray.
4. Preheat oven to 350.
5. Make cake batter.
6. Divide batter evenly between square and round baking dishes.
7. Bake until done. While cake is baking, make the frosting.
8. Remove from oven and allow to cool completely on a wire cooling rack.
9. Cut the circle down the middle.
10. Put the square cake on a plate, diagonally, and then add the 1/2 circles to form the heart.
11. Frost the cake and decorate. Enjoy!

When I made this cake, I used this chocolate cake recipe.  It’s a basic cake recipe and it’s so delicious!

Then, for the frosting, I used equal parts heavy cream/whipped cream and confectioners sugar (1 1/2 cups heavy cream and 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar). Or you can always buy any pre-made frosting.

To decorate the cake, have some fun!  I just used some simple natural sprinkles but get as creative as you’d like.  I thought these edible stars looked fun or even any fun sprinkle mix like these.

This cake is seriously so easy to put together and would be perfect for celebrating a loved one’s birthday, Valentine’s Day or anytime you want to make someone feel special!

And as you can tell, the kids simply couldn’t keep their hands off of it!  So, kid (and parent) approved ✔️
