Post-It Freezer Organization Method

Jan 2, 2021 · Leave a Comment

I don’t know about you – but my freezer can get a little unwieldy. What is even in there or what options for meals even exist? I’ve been using this Post-It freezer organization method and am so excited to share it with you. It’s also a great way to meal plan, and it’s flexible enough not to drive you crazy.

Post-It Freezer Organization Method:

  • Supplies: Grab some Post-It Notes (<- I love the colorful ones, but any sticky note will do) and a pen/marker
  • Take Inventory: Write everything in your freezer on its own Post-It (example: “ground turkey, 1 lb” or “freezer chicken enchilada casserole, 4 servings”)
  • Meal Plan/Use: As you use the ingredient/eat the meal, simply remove the post it note. You can move post it notes up to a meal planner if that helps (this is dry erase calendar we use).
  • Flexibility: If you don’t end up making the meal or using the freezer ingredient from your meal plan, simply move the post it note back down.

Tips and how to organize your freezer and meal plan:

  • The way I use this method is that whenever I make a freezer meal or get stuff from the grocery store for the freezer, I write what it is on a post it and tack it to the side of the fridge. I call this the ‘holding area’. You could have these post it’s wherever – it’s just easiest for me to see them on the side of the fridge.
  • When I’m meal planning for the week ahead, I’ll move whatever Post-Its up to the dry erase calendar, and then write in what I’ll be making as sides or stuff I need from the pantry. I also keep my shopping list on there-that way my husband or I can jot stuff down we’re out of.
  • This method is great for getting everyone involved in meal planning. I let Ben pick a meal/post it and move it. I’ll ask him what he’d like for dinner (burgers, tacos, chicken pasta) and he’ll choose, and then I let him move the Post-It up.
  • I like writing down how many servings of something there is so I know if I’ll need to make a bigger/smaller side dish.
  • I like this Post-It system because if you end up making something else not on your plan, you can just move the Post-It note back down to the ‘holding area’ instead of it messing up your whole plan.
  • This freezer organization method is a good overview picture of what we have on hand, and it helps me figure out quick dinners!

Our family meal plan using items from the freezer and freezer meals:

  • Sunday: 5 Ingredient pesto salmon with rice and green beans
  • Monday: Parmesan pork chops and a side salad
  • Tuesday: Ground turkey tacos
  • Wednesday: Freezer butternut squash soup with apple grilled cheese
  • Thursday: Burgers and grilled sweet potato fries
  • Friday: 5 Ingredient baked chicken parmesan pasta
  • Saturday: Pizza night & make waffles and freeze leftovers

Kid adding to the Post-It Freezer Organization Method

I originally saw this post-it freezer organization method on someone’s IG stories and thought at the time it was genius. Just the act of taking inventory of what’s in the freezer and then removing the post-it notes when you make something, it’s so simple!! When I opened my freezer one day and thought it was a big black hole/mess, I thought back to it and it’s been so amazing to implement.

Do you do any kind of freezer/fridge organization? I’d love to hear from you in the comments below!
