These quick, versatile cheese filled wontons made with Pick ‘n Save ingredients are a delicious and healthy take on my favorite Wisconsin State Fair food. They’re a great crunchy appetizer or snack for any occasion, and are very kid (and adult) friendly!
It’s almost August (eek, time is just a flyin’ this year!) and here in Milwaukee that means it’s almost time for the Wisconsin State Fair.
Since I happen to live very close to the fairgrounds, we end up going multiple days each year. And what does one do at the fair multiple days in a row? Well, one EATS, EATS, EATS!
More specifically, one eats fried foods….SO.MANY.FRIED.FOODS!
It’s not healthy, but that’s not the point…it’s the fun of it, walking around through the crowds and just enjoying the whole experience.
Speaking of experiences at the Fair (you should definitely go check out the Pick ‘n Save Day at the Fair August 9th), I have a funny story to share with you which ties into the recipe I’m sharing today.
When my husband and I first started dating 4 years ago, he took me on a date to the State Fair. Having recently moved, I was (still am) enamored with all things CHEESE! I mean, the cheese aisle at #MyPicknSave alone is something to write home about!
So we’re at the Fair, and he was like ‘I’m going to get us some mozzarella sticks’ I said ‘great’ but thought to myself ‘why would he get us mozzarella sticks, we can have those anywhere?’
We stood in line, got our order, and I seriously thought they had given us the wrong order. The mozzarella sticks were ginormous and in the shape of egg rolls with a side of marinara sauce. What was going on? He must have noticed the confused look on my face, because he proceeded to tell me that it is a ‘Wisconsin thing’ and that I just needed to try one!
So, I tried a bite…and OMG!!! It was SO GOOD!
Think of a giant eggroll stuffed with cheese and then fried… genius!
I ate three orders (I’m not proud of that lol) and then proceeded to go into a cheese coma (not even kidding, I think I napped for something like 5 hours straight!)
Another favorite fair memory…the time I met Blake Shelton, I was like ‘he’s not that tall’ um, yeah he is!
Clearly I love the Fair, and love cheese, but what do you do when you want to enjoy some mozzarella egg rolls at home and don’t have a fryer set up in your kitchen? You make these incredibly delicious baked mozzarella wonton bites.
As opposed to its counterpart that probably has upwards of 500 calories each, and then 4 of them per order (yeah, that’s your entire 2000 calories for a day in case you’re wondering), these little tasty bites come in at 40 calories each, so go ahead, have 4 for a whopping 160 calories!
To make the baked mozzarella wonton bites you start by purchasing your ingredients (I got my ingredients at Pick ‘n Save, a little tip for you, the wonton wrappers are in the fresh veggie section by the carrots!)
Then you’ll cut up mozzarella sticks into threes, and then -here is another helpful tip for you after making and testing this recipe 3 times- freeze the mozzarella for an hour- this way when you’re baking the bites, the cheese is less likely to come oozing out (although oozing browned cheese is never a bad thing!)
Once you remove the mozzarella from the freezer you’ll wrap the pieces in wonton wrappers, and then bake them to crispy perfection.
Then serve and watch them disappear!
Will you be going to a Fair this year? You can make as many bites as desired. Each mozzarella stick makes 3 wonton bites.
