Ingredients you need to make these 5-ingredient pitas – a Trader Joe’s Dinner idea:

  1. Shawarma Marinated Chicken (from Trader Joe’s) – you could use rotisserie chicken or marinate chicken with EVOO and shawarma spices (like this Shawarma seasoning)
  2. Tzatziki Sauce (also from Trader Joe’s) – or you could make homemade tzatziki sauce
  3. Pita Bread
  4. Tomatoes
  5. Cucumbers

Why This 5-Ingredient Shawarma Pita Recipe Rocks:

  • Minimal Ingredients: With only five key ingredients, this meal is as simple as it gets. It’s perfect for those nights when you want to cook something quick without a million ingredients.
  • Trader Joe’s Convenience: Using pre-marinated chicken and store-bought tzatziki means less prep work and more time enjoying your meal. Or you can use rotisserie chicken.
  • Fresh and Flavorful: The combination of juicy, spiced chicken with the crisp freshness of tomatoes and cucumbers creates a perfect easy dinner.

How to make 5 ingredient chicken shawarma pitas from Trader Joes

Instructions:

1. Cook the Shawarma Marinated Chicken:

  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees. I read a tip to cook the chicken in a loaf pan, so that’s what I did and it worked wonderfully. You don’t need any additional oil as the chicken is already seasoned and contains some oil from the marinade. I just sprayed the loaf pan with a little bit of cooking spray.
  • Cook the chicken according to the package instructions, typically 20 min at 400 degrees, until it’s fully cooked and reaches an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C). The outside should be nicely browned and a bit crispy.

2. Prepare the Vegetables:

  • While the chicken is cooking, chop your tomatoes and cucumbers into bite-sized pieces.

3. Warm the Pita Bread:

  • To make your pita bread warm and pliable, you can quickly heat it in a dry skillet over medium heat for about 1-2 minutes per side. Alternatively, you can microwave it for 10-15 seconds or toast it in the toaster oven for a minute or two. Warming the pita makes it easier to fold and stuff. I cut each pita in half.

4. Assemble the Pitas:

  • Slice the cooked chicken into strips or bite-sized pieces.
  • Spread a generous amount of tzatziki sauce inside each pita.
  • Layer in the chicken, followed by the chopped tomatoes and cucumbers. If you have any extra tzatziki, you can drizzle a bit more on top for added flavor.

5. Serve and Enjoy:

  • Serve your pitas immediately while they’re warm and the flavors are fresh.

Tips for Perfection:

  • For Extra Flavor: Add a sprinkle of fresh herbs like parsley or dill on top of the tzatziki before adding the chicken and veggies.
  • Customizing: Feel free to include other toppings like red onions, olives, lettuce or feta cheese if you have them on hand.
  • Make Ahead: The cooked chicken can be made in advance and stored in the fridge for a few days. Just reheat it before assembling your pitas.

Tools to Make These 5-Ingredient Chicken Pitas Even Easier

  • Loaf pan (nonstick, love these): I cook the marinated chicken in a loaf pan, and it works so well. The deeper sides keep all of the flavorful marinade and juices contained, and cleanup is incredibly easy.
  • Instant-read meat thermometer: Chicken pieces can vary in size and thickness, so a thermometer takes away the guesswork. Check the thickest piece and cook until it reaches 165°F.
  • Paper plates (love these eco friendly ones): This is a real-life busy-night dinner, so give yourself permission to skip the dishes! Serve the assembled pitas on paper plates for an easy meal with almost no cleanup.

FAQs for easy chicken pitas

  • What do you put in a chicken pita? A chicken pita is typically filled with cooked chicken, a soft pita or flatbread, and a few simple toppings for flavor and texture. Popular additions include fresh vegetables like tomatoes, cucumbers, or lettuce, plus a creamy sauce such as tzatziki, yogurt sauce, or hummus. Cheese, herbs, or a drizzle of olive oil can also be added depending on what you have on hand.
  • What goes well with pita bread? Pita bread pairs well with a wide range of savory and fresh foods. It’s delicious with proteins like grilled or roasted chicken, falafel (air fryer falafel bowl), or chickpeas (crispy chickpeas shwarama recipe), and it works perfectly with dips and spreads such as hummus, tzatziki, yogurt sauce, or whipped feta. Fresh vegetables like cucumbers, tomatoes, and greens add crunch, while simple toppings like olive oil, herbs, or cheese bring extra flavor.

This 5-ingredient chicken pita recipe is proof that easy recipes can still feel fresh and satisfying. It’s the kind of real-life dinner you can lean on when the day has been full and the question “what’s for dinner?” feels heavy. Simple ingredients, big flavor, and zero fuss—exactly the kind of meal that fits into busy days and actually makes them feel a little easier.

For some reason I always forget that we could have sandwiches (or pitas) for dinner. This recipe looks great!

My go-to chicken recipe is a chicken curry in the slow cooker. I switch it up between red Thai curry paste and the green paste, and throw in whatever veggies (fresh or frozen) I have on hand.

I make easy shredded chicken with frozen skinless, boneless chicken thighs from Aldi’s in my Instant Pot with olive oil, chicken broth, tomato sauce & paste, garlic and my dry rub. For the whole package of chicken, I use Manual for 25 min. and with coming up to pressure and 15 min natural release it takes an hour. The shredded chicken the first night can be a soup, over rice or over noodles. It would be great in the chicken pitas! The leftovers I use to make my version of Chicken Tikka Masala.

Yum! I didn’t have chicken on hand, so I substituted leftover grilled veggies. They are delicious. My favorite chicken dinner is a classic roasted chicken. We always include your 5-Ingredient Cinnamon Spice Roasted Carrots.

Our favorite chicken meal is a Chicken Pot Pie. I use premade rolled crust, a bag of frozen mixed vegetables, cooked diced chicken thighs or breasts and make my own gravy/sauce. It’s really quite fast and easy.
