We’re thrilled to bring another Back of the Box series recipe review your way, with a delicious warm beverage everyone can enjoy – a mocha recipe made with hot cocoa mix! If you’re new to the series, Nick and I work together to make recipes exactly as they are listed on the back of the box (or bag/jar/can/etc.) and see how they taste! Our expert panel of taste testers are our three kids; our eldest Ben and his younger twin brother and sister, Freddie and Frankie.
Things in life don’t always go as planned, but I am a pretty firm believer in trying to make the best of the situation at hand. We had another recipe lined up for this weekend, but a long series of events resulted in some unfortunately undercooked chicken that I couldn’t salvage, followed by an overnight snow storm that found the whole family outside shoveling and playing in the snow. But in the end this series of events lead to the discovery of this recipe and ultimately this fun little post. After we came in from the snow, we pulled out a jar of Penzeys® Hot Chocolate Mix for the kids and noticed there was a recipe for Cafe Mocha on the back of the jar under the regular cooking instructions. Since we were without the previously mentioned chicken we thought this was a great fill-in recipe for the week’s blog post.
Not a lot to write about here, this one’s as simple as they come. You’re basically adding some hot chocolate to your coffee. Penzey’s does sort of leave the proportions up to you, but they do have some suggestions.
I’ll start off by admitting that I did not brew up the coffee. I am only an occasional coffee drinker, but Phi has (at least) one cup every morning. She really knows how to work the French Press, so I put her to work for this project making the coffee. After that was out of the way you portion it in your favorite cup (about 2 parts coffee to 1 part milk) while the coffee is still hot then stir in the Hot Chocolate mix to taste. After our first few sips we both decided to add a bit more coffee and another tsp of the mix to our mugs. Once you get your proportions down, finish how you like, Penzeys® suggests stirring with a stick of cinnamon. We opted for a more classic whip cream and chocolate drizzle topping. Overall, this one’s as easy as they come, mostly just pour, stir and enjoy.
I was actually pleasantly surprised. Phi and I have two kinds of hot chocolate: this Penzey’s® mix for the kids and a spicier mexican style hot chocolate for us. Usually I find this one to be a tad too sweet but the coffee was certainly a welcome addition. As mentioned above Phi and I both upped the coffee and chocolate over the recommended proportions. I think this will probably come down to being similar to how you like your coffee. You definitely need some milk to mix with the hot chocolate mix, but I did find myself looking for a little more coffee and chocolate after that first sip. In the end, I definitely wouldn’t think twice about warming up with one of these Cafe Mochas after a morning of shoveling.
What did SweetPhi think?
I loved how easy this mocha recipe was and it was delicious. But to be honest we had to add double the hot chocolate mix for me to taste the ‘chocolate’ part of the mocha. It was a little on the weak side for me. But, it was a super fun drink and way to spice up your plain coffee.
Did the kids eat it?
3 out of 3 kids drank it!
Well, they had the plain hot chocolate at least. Ben, Freddie and Frankie certainly don’t need coffee or caffeine; they’re high enough energy for us as is! However, this is really a quality hot chocolate that we’ve long kept on hand and ready in winter for after we come in from playing in the snow. You probably wouldn’t be surprised to hear the kids love theirs topped with whip cream as well.
This mocha recipe made with hot cocoa mix was an all-around winner and couldn’t be easier to make!
