The Star of the Show: Chili Crisp
Chili crisp is a condiment that has been gaining popularity in recent years for good reason. It’s a fiery and fragrant sauce made from a combination of dried chilies, fried garlic, shallots, and a blend of aromatic spices. The result is a deep, complex heat that adds a unique depth of flavor to any dish. It offers a unique blend of smokiness, umami, and a slow-building heat that dances on your palate. When used as a pizza topping, chili crisp takes it to a whole new level of deliciousness.
Chili crisp can be used on: vanilla ice cream, fried eggs, vegetables, meat and cheeses, and carbs!
Customization and Heat Levels
One of the great things about sausage and kale pizza with chili crisp is that you can customize the heat level to suit your preferences. If you’re an avid spice lover, go ahead and liberally drench your pizza in chili crisp. If you prefer a milder heat, a modest drizzle will still provide a flavorful kick without overwhelming your taste buds. This versatility makes it a fantastic option for family pizza night, where everyone can tailor their slice to their liking.
To make this sausage and kale pizza with chili crisp, you’ll need the following ingredients:
- Pizza dough/flatbread (we used premade flatbread, or you could buy a round shaped one)
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1/2 pound Italian sausage, cooked and crumbled (we used chicken Italian sausage)
- 2 cups fresh kale, torn into bite-sized pieces
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1/2 cup shredded Parmesan cheese
- 2 tablespoons chili crisp (or more if you love the heat!)
Instructions
Now, let’s get cooking:
- Preheat your oven to 450°F. If you have a pizza stone or pizza steel, place it in the oven to heat up.
- Place your crust on a baking sheet (or transfer crust onto a pizza peel or an inverted baking sheet lined with parchment paper. This will make it easier to slide the pizza onto the hot stone or steel in the oven.)
- In a large pan drizzle the olive oil, then add the Italian sausage and cook it until it starts to brown, about 5 minutes, breaking it up as it cooks, then add the kale and cook until softened, 2 minutes and when the Italian sausage is cooked through (no more pink visible) remove from heat. Add a pinch of salt and pepper to taste.
- Sprinkle the shredded mozzarella cheese evenly over the crust.
- Distribute the cooked Italian sausage and kale leaves over the cheese.
- Sprinkle the parmesan over the Italian sausage and kale.
- Carefully transfer the pizza (on the parchment paper) onto the preheated pizza stone or steel in the oven if using.
- Bake for 10-12 minutes or until the crust is golden and the cheese is bubbling and slightly browned.
- Remove the pizza from the oven and immediately drizzle the chili crisp over the top. Adjust the amount to your desired level of spiciness.
- Slice, serve and enjoy!
