This 5 ingredient green power smoothie {made with spinach, banana, mango, cherries and yogurt} will have you starting your day in a nutritious and delicious way and is packed with fruits and veggies to create the perfect green smoothie.
I can remember a while back when green smoothies were all the rage. ALL THE RAGE. Do you remember? You’d see them on every blog, in health food stores, on cafe menus and on every instagram page (yes, you even saw a green smoothie on my instagram not only once, but twice).
Because, the truth is, I tried them and I liked them. But unlike some fads, I didn’t stop liking them. I’ve always liked knowing that whenever I’m drinking a green smoothie I’m drinking something super nutritious that has fruits and veggies.
The trick is getting it to taste good. If you have the flavors a little off, green smoothies can be down right gross.
I’ve found what works for me for getting the flavor and texture just right is using frozen fruit and a little bit of Stonyfield french vanilla yogurt. It gives the smoothie coldness from the frozen fruit, and then creamy texture from the yogurt. And while I have tried quite a few brands of french vanilla yogurt, my allegiance is with Stonyfield. Theirs is the only french vanilla that isn’t overly sweet or leaves one with an odd taste in ones mouth. Their french vanilla is smooth and creamy and so so so delish!
And because I’m always running around in the mornings, it makes life just that much more convenient to have a little blender that is a single serve-and-go. At first I thought that there was no way the little blender would make a smoothie out of the ingredients. No way would it be powerful enough. Thankfully, I was wrong. All I did to make this green power smoothie was put the ingredients in, add some water, hit the power button and voila, green smoothie time! The blender I used was this Hamilton Beach single serve blender.
Do you want a cool little single serve blender of your own? Simply tell me what your favorite type of smoothie is in the comments, and a winner will be chosen March 31, 2015!

Green smoothies will always be the rage, in my book! Love this combo too! Mango and banana always go into my smoothies, the flavors go together perfectly. I feel fortunate to say I’ve only had one awful smoothie that I’ve made and it was due to using Trader Joe’s chopped fresh kale and it tasted like dirt – bleh!
Sweetphi says
Mango and bananas are just so fantastic in smoothies, those are total musts 🙂 That’s pretty amazing that you’ve only had one bad smoothie lol, I feel like until discovering a few combinations, I had a lot of duds. I’ll be sure to stay away from chopped kale!

Oh man definitely try avacado! It adds great creamyness and keeps you full with the healthy fat 🙂 for my coffee frapp smoothie i add either cold coffee or espresso powder, cashew milk, a few ice cubes, little vanilla extract, and the key to gettibg it to be perfectly blended like at a coffee shop is a pinch of xanthum gum…. Available at health food stores like whole foods or sprouts. A bit pricy for a bag, but it lasts forever and the frapps at starbucks are yummy, but a little pricey for all the time
Sweetphi says
Thank you so much for sharing what’s in your coffee frapp smoothie, I am totally going to try that! I just so happen to have some xanthum gum in my pantry, so I’ll use it to make the frapp 🙂
Nikki says
I do one with xantham gum

love it! I ALWAYS have a green smoothie after workouts. Its become such a {positive} habit. I alternate between kale and spinach in terms of the greens I add to it and then, any other fruit. Nothing like frozen fruits as add-ins.
I would have to say my favorite type of smoothie includes: spinach, banana, mixed berries, almond milk, coconut water, ground cinnamon and a bit of stevia for taste. heaven.
Sweetphi says
I have never tried adding kale, so I’m definitely going to have to try that! And your favorite smoothie type sounds amazing!
Susan Craig says
I never made a green smoothie. Your recipe is tempting me to try one. The smoothie I like best is plain old strawberry vanilla. Thanks for the heads-up on the Stonyfield yogurt. Maybe that is why my smoothies have been disappointing.
Sweetphi says
I’ve found that adding a little yogurt is really the key for a creamy smoothie, it just gives it a little bit of oomph 🙂
alex robertson says
I love a smoothie with lots of banana…. Also throw in some avocado yumm. Coffee smoothies like a homeade frapp for days the baby didn’t let me sleep haha.
Sweetphi says
Lots of bananas are the way to go, and I have never added avocados, but now I totally have to try adding some in! And why oh why have I never tried a coffee smoothie, definitely need to try one…what do you put in it?

I think you’d love green smoothies, the trick is to add fruit (like mangos) and a little bit of yogurt! So good!
